The Black Panther film series is currently in development by director Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, according to a new report.
The news comes a few days after the actor’s name was revealed on the website Deadline.com.
In a tweet sent to Deadline, The Rock said that he is “actively pursuing” a project to direct the film, which would follow the story of Black Panther’s founding member, Huey P. Newton.
Johnson is one of several actors reportedly on the hot seat for the project.
Deadline reported earlier this month that a third actor, Tyler Perry, was attached to star in the project, but Perry was also rumored to be leaving the project in 2018.
Perry’s involvement was reportedly cut short when the actor failed to agree to a deal with Universal.
Johnson, who is currently busy shooting his fifth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been rumored to direct and produce an untitled film in 2019.
The actor’s next project is set to be the film The Fighter, which will be released in 2019 and is directed by Chris Miller.
The film, a remake of the 1990s Marvel comic book series The Ultimates, will star Hugh Jackman as an assassin.
The director also penned the script for the upcoming adaptation of the 1980s TV show The Vampire Diaries, which is currently filming.
